Kurtis Blow

Curtis "Kurtis Blow" Walker, (born on August 9, 1959, in Harlem, New York) is one of the pioneer rappers in the recording industry, and hip hop's first mainstream star. Watch him on YouTube with "Christmas Rappin'" (1980): http://youtube.com/watch?v=DZiNBMqJEUM

The Sugarhill Gang were the first group with a hip hop (rap) single that became a Top 40 hit. This was "Rapper's Delight" (in 1979).

the official first rapper was an MC named Coke La Rock. He used to "Move the Crowd" while Kool DJ Herc, the creator of hip-hop music, played his records. Coke La Rock might not have been the first rapper with a record deal, or first to gain commercial success, such as the Sugar Hill Gang and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. But he was the first person to grab a microphone and talk over a beat, making him the first MC (Rapper) ever.

Muhammad Ali the former World Heavyweight Champion could well lay claim to being the first rapper. He used to recite is own poetry at press conferences before his matches. He didn't have a musical backup but his style of poetry is very similar to rap.

Even before Ali there was a style of music known as the talking blues. It consisted of spoken verses against an instrumental background. The poetry and music is quite different from modern rap but the overall form is the same. Country singer Text Williams and folk singers Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan used the form. It is thought to go back to early spirituals.

The art form goes back to the mid-1960's New York/Harlem area. It started as a Saturday night street party contest/game. People would work all week on their thing and then there would be "scratch offs" on Saturday night...often in a local park. Eventually New York street poetry got folded into the beats. Grand Master Flash invented the dual switched turntable setup (1975 I think)...but he wasn't the first scratcher.

Another weird fact...the basketball player Dr. J got his name as a beat artist as a kid...he was a superstar in NY when he was 15...Raw Dr. Jam was the 15 year old scratcher that could slam a basketball and scratch with the best.

Added: The Muhammad Ali reference is right on too...because he was a Harlem street kid...his "poetry" was something all the kids did in the parks, on the street.

I don't really think you can say there was a first rapper. Rap sort of evolved from older styles of music. It didn't happen overnight.
