A number that represents how likely something is to happen.

If something is absolutely certain to happen, we say its probability is one. If something is impossible, we say its probability is zero. A number between zero and one means we don't know for sure what will happen, but the higher the number the more likely something is to happen. If something has a probability of 0.8, most people would say "it probably will happen".

If you put the letters for the word DOG in a bag, what is the probability that the first letter you draw out would be a D? (The answer is 1 out of 3 or 1/3).

Now try the word GOOD. What is the probability that you would choose a D on the first draw? (1 out of 4 or 1/4) What is the probability that you would draw an O? Since there are two O's it would be 2 out of 4 or 2/4 which is the same as 1/2.

A count of desired outcomes, divided by a coount of all possible outcomes. This gives a value from zero (impossible, or no desired outcomes) to 1 (certainty, or all outcomes desired).

Where a probability is very low (0.001) might be referred to as "one in a thousand".
