Don't worry. It's normal to be scared. Let your GYN know it's your first visit and that you're really nervous. Dr's are usually very sensitive to girls on their first GYN visit. They may start with taking a medical history (just talking to you about what's going on) You'll get a breast exam and then the Dr. will put your feet in the stirrups of the exam table and will do a pelvic exam. The Dr. will tell you exactly what he/she is doing and probably ask you to breathe to help you to relax. After the pelvic, the Dr. will do a PAP test. The Dr will insert a speculum so she can see what she's doing. Take deep breaths while this is being done. try to relax. If it's a regular smear, it will be a mild scraping of cervical cells that is placed on a slide for evaluation. Most Dr.s do a Thin Prep test which is a small brush to scrape cells off of the cervix but instead of using a slide, the brush is placed in solution. You may or may not have some slight bleeding after the exam. Just remember to stay as relaxed as possible. The more tense you are, the more uncomfortable it will be. Good luck!

Aren't you suppose to be 18-21 to have one? Anyway, they usually put a metal or plastic thing into your vagina to open it up (this might be uncomfortable but shouldn't hurt). Then they look around to make sure it looks healthy. Then they take a plastic stick and swipe some of the cells from your cervix, this is called a "pap test" or "pap smear". This can detect any cancer cells. And that's it! Fast and easy.

Don't worry, your doctor does this on a regular bases and should explain things as she goes along. Just relax and remember that this is for your own health. Sometimes closing your eyes and imagining how great it will be when this is done and over with, helps :)

Good luck, and remember, we all have to go through this!

If it is like most gyno appt the doctor will do a breast exam and explain why you need to do them and how to do it. He will then have you put your feet in stirups and with lubrication insert two finger into your vagina while pressing on your tummy. This is to check your ovarys and uterus. If you get a pap smear also he will then insert a speculum and use a long q-tip to rub your cerivex and test the cells. Be sure to tell them you are a virgin so they will explain what they are doing and will use a smaller speculum. It shouldnt hurt, but it is uncomfortable. Your mom should be able to go in with you and hold your hand . It helps to try to stay relaxed.

Just relax hun it is alright it shouldnt hurt a bit!! Before the dr starts explain to them that this is your first one and you would like them to guide you through it they will be very understanding and should talk you through every step of it!!! It is nothing to be worried about.

Totally talk to someone. Maybe not your mom if you're nervous, but some woman you trust. I was a virgin when I had my first one and it didn't really hurt, but it was weird having someone I didn't know put their fingers in my vagina. But it doesn't really hurt.
