basically, how it goes is, things evolve, and when the evolution helps in its survival, they become more able to survive and such and mate and create more like themselves. and when a bad evolution comes along that is bad for the species because it makes feeding or mating harder, they die off because of their in-adaptable state to their surroundings.

Survival of the fittest was a term Wallace used and Darwin never liked too much. He preferred natural selection, though this may have implied someone/thing doing the selecting. The term merely means that those having greater surviving progeny are selected fit by this. Rather circular, but that does not make it less true.

"Survival of the Fittest" is a misstatement of Darwin's idea as stated in his book title " On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" The term was first used in this regard by Herbert Spencer. In practice it is almost always applied circularly - this species is the fittest one because it survived, unfit weaklings perish.
Stephen Gould points out that natural selection often works randomly - as with species of plankton that survived the dinosaur-killer because they already had a life cycle that included a dormant phase that was capable of outlasting the planetary winter.
Darwin gave examples of sexual selection. A peacock's tail can only be thought of as more "fit" in relation to courting peahens, otherwise it is strictly an encumbrance.
Darwin's idea, still upheld, is that natural selection could produce change in species. The idea that species necessarily become more "fit" as a result is mistaken.

lol its natural selection, meaning that the strongest...smartest, hairiest or w.e is supposed to survive over the other race. but u shud knw tht we humans have totally destroyed NATURAL SELECTION, we keep people with disorders alive, overweight, got a problem with the heat, we got airconditioning, got a problem with the cold, put on a winter coat. Darwin has found out about natural selection when he went to the Galapagos island
