Like the previous answer, disconnecting the battery will usually reset the check engine light, but it won't make your problem go away. Your battery light most likely is caused by a poor charging system. Battery cables may need attention, or there may be other problems in the system. The light is wired so it gets 12 volts from "two" different directions. When there is a failure in the system, the light will illuminate and tell you that there is something wrong. It could be an overcharge or an under charge to your battery. This is probably whats causing your check engine to come on. I'd repair the charging system before anything. A voltmeter will help. With the car turned off, check the voltage between the terminals on the battery. It should be 12 volts. Next start the car, and read it again. It should be around 14.5 volts. If it stays at 12 volts with the car running, the alternator isn't charging, if it reads more than around 15.5 volts, the regulator is probably bad.

You don't reset the battery light. You fix what's causing it before you get stranded. It's generally a bad alternator. Your engine light might cure itself when you do that.
