The Hard Drive in your computer probably has Windows XP installed or some other Operating System.. The hard drive in your DVR/Tivo has a completely different set of files on it. Other than the format of the drives (software, files, etc.) they are exactly the same and are interchangeable.

To change the hard drive from your DVR and use it with a computer you will need to install an operating system such as Windows, Unix, etc..

To change the hard drive from your computer to your Tivo you will need to get an image from another Tivo and put it on the drive.

The hard drives in your DVR are most likely 5400 rpm, whereas in your desktop most likely 7200 rpm
