sometimes if I move to fast or make a loud noise, my cats will take off running and hide in my cabinets the rest of the day. It doesn't always mean past or present abuse. Just like people, animals can be very sensitive to body language , noise, tone of voice, company over, etc. When I got my dogs, my cats, and bunnies, were so stressed out for a while, they wouldn't let me come close. they do that after I babysit too. Imagine. You are enormous compared to your pet, you come lumbering up to them, arms waving around(to them), maybe you talk in a baby voice....that really freaks them out, no matter how much they love you.

Some pets are very sensitive by nature, but generally it's something in their past. The pet may have been abused by someone before you got it. My dog is afraid of people carrying large objects or making sudden hand gestures. I think his last owner may have hit him. Even one bad experience will stay with some pets.

If a pet is acting scared of a specific person I would say that person has done something directly or indirectly to the animal to scare it. If the animal was adopted or given to you then it may be the previous owner who has done something.

They have may been abused in the past or someone hurt them and you didn't even know that it happened. Some animals are just intimidated easily like some humans. Just show them lots of love and most of all patience and understanding.

My little dog is like that with my brother. When ever my bro comes over Simon (dog) hides untill my bro talks him out from behind the couch. The dog doesn't do that with any one else, and my brother has never hurt the dog.
simon is just a wierdo. he is scaird of lighters, and chapstick, and bikes, rollerblades, etc. all sorts of stuff.

It usually means you've done something to scare them, even though it might not have been intentional.

pets that I have seen are frightened of those who abuse them. Perhaps they are not so crazy.
