My friends and I are planning a trip to visit Scotland and Ireland in 2008. Never traveling over seas before I was wondering what I should prepare for as far as how soon in advance to get my tickets, or if I should go with a traveling agancy, where to stay, if anyone has any sites or information that could help please let me know!

Check out Rick Steves' guidebooks and website. He has a lot of good information on smaller towns and B&B's, plus sites to see off the beaten path, etc. All of his recommendations are rated by the readers for both quality and price and are places he has actually stayed - plus, many of them give you discounts if you mention that "Rick Steves sent me." He also tells you how and what to pack, must-haves in terms of local dishes, experiences, etc., local festivals, prices to expect both on and off season, etc. My husband and I did England, Scotland and Europe (Germany, France, Austria, and Italy) with his recommendations and they were great.

When you want to start serious planning depends on when you are going to go in 2008. I really don't think a year in advance is too early, though - you can watch airfare prices on the web so you can determine what is and isn't a good deal, spread out any purchases such as new luggage or travel gear over a longer period of time, etc., etc.

Two places I would definitely visit again in Scotland: Ullapool (extreme north) and Jedburough (sp?). Nice little towns with excellent scenery, food, and lodging and friendly, friendly people, too.

I'm jealous - wish I could go back, too!!

Have fun!!

Take an umbrella but have a great time. You'll love it I'm sure.
