I would choose pain meds again. I tried it without but by the time I was 5 cm I requested drugs, but I was induced and I have been told that is way more painful than just going into labor. My sister has 3 kids and had them all with no pain meds so it just depends. You can always try to do it without and if it gets to bad for you, just request some. good luck

This is a really personal question... It really depends on your body and duration & progress of labor. Birthplans are good to get an idea of what you may want or what your options might be. But you are not any less a woman by monitoring your pain. I had Fentanyl & an epidural during an 18 hour labor. I still ended up having a c-section. Just communicate with you dr. when in labor! And don't feel you have to stick with any one thing!

I am a mother of 3 children...my first one was C-section so not much choice. My 2nd I chose epidural because my 1st delivery was so long and I'm a sissy for pain. My 3rd I had an epidural because the pain was unbearable! But when it was time for her to come out the doctor was doing an emergency C-section so I had to wait and my epidural wore off. So I had to push her out with nothing and it actually wasn't so bad. Still, though, if you have a low pain tolerance, I would 100% say get the drugs!! After all, they don't give you high 5's for going without...why torture yourself?!

First, EVERY birth is different.
as for mine, i was in labor forfor about 20 hrs, with 1 hr 10 min of pushing.
i went the first 14 hours with only IV drugs, (moderate painkillers) and i was very uncomfortable. i did get an epidural 6 hrs before i started pushing. that also had its own drawbacks--i couldnt move my own body from the belly button down, and the nurses had to come rotate me every hour. and i had to have a cathiter, because i couldnt tell if or when i had to pee.
i am glad i got the epidural, because, being my first time, i wa worried about enough things. it amde it easier to concentrate on what i had to do. (if) i have a second child, i might try it without drugs, because then i already know what im to do, and how things proceed, i dont think i will be as worried as i was with the first one.

Hello, I am currently pregnant with my first also, and I'm hoping to go natural. I've been told that it all depends on your threshold for pain. Each person is different. Everyone as been supportive of my decision, but recomment that I get info on the drugs available as well. That way, if when it comes time I can't do it, I will be able to make an informed decision and not just take whatever they give me without knowing the possible side affects. Good luck

I am all for an epidural, I have had two children and I got an eppy with both. I am glad that some women are brave enough to not use a epidural but I really enjoyed being able to experience the labor and concentrate on what was going on instead of screaming in pain. There is no doubt in my mind that I couldnt tolerate the pain but I just wanted to be able to stay in focus and enjoy the situation.

I did it without drugs both times. It hurt, but it is not so much pain that you can't handle. Take it as it comes, if you want the epidural then get it. Better to have a pleasent memory of the birth then none at all because you couldn't handle the pain.

I would get some kind of medication for sure! It really hurts when you start to contract, and if you are in labor for hours and hours why do that to yourself. Plus if you are in labor for hours and hours, you may be so exhausted at the end and not be able to push or fully concentrate. My doctor really recommended an epidural, she said that we are not super women and why do we need to go through all of that pain - what are we proving by having the baby naturally . Please do this for yourself, get an epidural it'll really help you.

i really wanted to try and do it natural for my first one, but didn't quite make it. i made it as far as i could though. you can always plan on doing it without drugs and then change your mind if you think you need them later. however, don't wait too long and miss "the window".
