Fixing Governor Schwarzenegger's broken femur seemed like a major medical procedure. Doctor's inserted a metal plate used cables and all kinds of stuff. What happened to the days of a simple plaster cast and when did all the metal implants begin that create the bionic man?

The advances in medicine concerning bones is amazing. Although plaster casts are still used to imobilize a bone, metal plates and screws are used in a bone that has to move or one that is severely broken. The bone heals faster because an arm or leg that moves is healthier. Most of the time the screws, plates etc. are left in place, but sometimes they are removed after the bone has healed. Fiberglass casts are also used because they are so much lighter. Countless deformities and complications of broken bones have been eliminated. A broken femur is a life threatening break.

Depends on age as well. The older one gets the more likely that a cast will not fix a broken bone.
