I'm all about the Azzurri but I still think Zidane is great.

I am Italian and a Italy fan. Zidane knocking down Materazzi got him a red and only helped us anyway so what does it matter.

Italians do not hate Zidane, and not even what he did in that Final; people in Italy are quite angry for what happened just after that: French people, including political authorities, justified he's behavior while demonizing Materazzi, for instance.
When Totti spitted toward Paulsen in Euro 2004, nobody in Italy said he was right just because the Danish player was starting Totti off; we agreed Totti did wrong and it was not the first time (and Zidane the same, by the way: being myself a Juventus supporter I very well remember how many red cards he gained...).
What Italian (especially journalists) did wrong was not blaming Materazzi the same they blamed Paulsen.
We all grant Zizou as one of the best player as for latest 20 years.

I guess a lot of people are loyal to certain rivalries. Italy is a World Cup rival of France, so some Italians may not like Zidane because he's French.

I surprise in which you acquired all this understanding. I simplest knew approximately the Saudi Arabian participant and the germasn participant - as though that is now not sufficient. But the ones are the one 2 that have been recounted through the clicking right here, I surprise why any other assaults of him have been not noted? Until the occurrence on the Worldcup, I did not even recognise he had a historical past of violence, as I can suppose plenty of men and women did not. I ponder whether the opposite men he harm weren't in essential football leagues and did not get as so much protection? Thanks for the information, it sounds just like the golden shoe award would possibly must be reconsidered?

Zidane is a great player. I think the reason why they hate him is because of what he did in the world cup.

That's a pretty broad generalisation... I have nothing against Zidane. Any intelligent soccer supporter would respect him as a player and forget about certain actions.
