It entered the statehood in 1959, on January 3. It was part of the Alaskan Purchase and the reason why we got it is for the Gold Rush in the mid to late 1800's. The oil bit was learned later on after the signing and the purchase.

Purchased from Russia on April 16, 1867, Alaska became the 49th US state on January 3, 1959. The name "Alaska" is derived from the Aleut Alaskax, alternately spelled Alyeska.
With over 3 million lakes, 3,000 rivers and 34,000 miles of coastline, Alaska is one of the most bountiful fishing regions in the world, producing seafood known for its abundance and variety. Among them: five species of salmon, three types of crab, and several varieties of whitefish. Swimming wild in these icy pure waters, and feeding on a natural diet, Alaska Seafood develops a superior texture and unparalleled flavor prized by chefs and connoisseurs alike.
Alaska's Operating Mines and Advanced Exploration Properties
Three open pit and two underground hard rock mines; one coal mine; plus one underground placer; and numerous conventional placer operations operate in Alaska-employing 2000 - 3,500 people and producing over one billion dollars (1,000,000,000) annually in mineral value. Mine locations are distributed from the far north west to southeast Alaska, with advanced exploration projects scattered proximal to operating mines as well as in other areas around the state.
Alaska Oil Field's
The oil fields in Alaska are important because The United States' dependency on petroleum imports has risen considerably in the past twenty years. The shocks of 1973 and 1980, and the 1978 Khomeini revolution in Iran had serious repercussions in The United States, where Americans had to wait in line for hours to buy gasoline.
