Thunderstorms occur were cold dry air mixes with warm humid air, creating strong turbulence which generates millions of volts of electricity, and water condenses out of the humid air and falls as rain. This occurs frequently in the tropics but also in temperate zones during seasons in which warm and cold air are likely to collide.

Although they can be found anywhere, they are moslty found in typically unstable and moist environment. They usually occur on the SE and E side of a Upper Level Low Pressure center or ahead/along a cold front.

They often occur in the presence of three conditions: sufficient moisture accumulated in the lower atmosphere, reflected by high dewpoint temperatures; a significant fall in air temperature with increasing height, known as a steep adiabatic lapse rate; and a force such as mechanical convergence along a cold front to focus the lift.
