420 2846 up, 291 down
So far the majority of you are incorrect.
420's origin IS known.
the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.
So there ya go, someone's parents out there invented the term 4/20.
And remember this:
There are NOT 420 chemicals in Weed. It's about 315, the num. goes up or down depending on what you're smoking.
4/20 is NOT police code or Maryjane.
And that whole **** about Holland and 4/20 over there being "tea time" for smokers isn't true either.
I know my ****.

It's slang for pot.
It was created by a school clique called the Melvins (not the band) who would meet at 420 outside of their high school to smoke pot. Some of those students became writers for the marijuana magazine High Times, where it was introduced into the lexicon.
It is not the police code for drugs, that's a common fallacy.
4/20 is also Hitler's birthday and the day of the Columbine shootings but none of the three things have anything to do with each other.

For some people (particularly some of those within cannabis culture, but also more widely), the number 420 (pronounced four-twenty) relates to the consumption of cannabis as a drug, and elements of its associated culture. The exact origin of the term is unknown. Cannabis users gather on April 20 ("4/20" in the United States dating shorthand) every year to celebrate and consume cannabis. 4:20p.m. (or even a.m.) is also a popular time to consume cannabis.[1] "420 friendly" is seen on advertisements for roommates, indicating that the housemates are tolerant of smoking

Jam above is pretty darn right. It's the time and date people smoke weed. I believe there are also 420 chemicals in weed. And it's not "cop-code" for anything. Cops don't share codes. Each department has several codes that are different. There are only a few that are the same.

It's not really weed, but the time of the day which has been associated with weed. At that time, every pothead in the world feels they have to be smoking. I don't know how true this is...but I heard that it's because Bob Marley died at that exact time, 4:20.

420 is the time of day to light up. If it is April 20, it's International Smoke-out Day.

I am not sure where the term came from, but some people say it's 420, and that usually means that it is time to use the drug.
