I get 12 oranges -
Mrs. Pena:
ate 1
ate 1 and 1/2 for juice (?)
Daughter:
ate 1
used 1/2 for juice (?)
2 left over
must have been 4 for daughter to juice half + 1 she ate =5 oranges
Mrs. Pena make juice using half the oranges, 5+5=10
Mrs. Pena ate 2 in the beginning 10+2=12
Hope it's right!!

Start backwards

2 oranges (2 o)
double
4 o
add 1
5 o
double
10 o
add 1
11 o
add 1
12 o

12 oranges where initially bought.

All right. Start from the end.

2 oranges at the end. Double that to get 4. Add one to get 5. So there were 5 oranges when her daughter came.

Then, double 5 to get 10. Add one to get 11. And another to get 12. That's how many she started with.

12 -> 11 -> 10 -> 5 (juice) -> 4 -> 2(juice)
