when a rock is formed at a faster rate, the crystles are smaller, as they do not have as much time to form. normally, lavas that cools on the earth surface forms obsidian because it cools too quikly for any crystles to be formed.

Rocks tt have big crystles are mostly formed while still under the earth's surface. because they are cooled so slowly, it could take hundreds and thousands and millions of years, the crystles are much bigger. tt's how we get our granite.
