Learn everything you can about basketball and play it alot, you can read all the books you want but nobodies gonna listen unless you prove you know what you're talking about...study offenses and defenses etc

I would say do not focus on becoming a Basketball "Coach" if you've read about great the greats, then you would know that some of the great coaches...such as, Chuck Daly, Red Holzman, and others I can't think of right now, played the game before becoming coaches. some did not go on to play professional, and they were not actually noticed as much playing high school and college, but they knew there way around the game before becoming a coach, I suggest focusing on playing really, too young in the first place, plus u need to learn your way around the game inside and out. I hope I helped. ;)

As well as everything everyone else has said I would try a couple others:

1) if you play on your team....try to learn the point guard position...they are responsible for the entire court and lots of good coaches are former point guards.
2) if you play or manage...sit as close to your coach as you can during games to pick up on what he does and why he does it.

if you do not play on your school's team, become a stat keeper or get involved on some level. talk to the coach at your school and let him know your ambition. do the same in college. read and watch Bobby Knight as much as possible. good luck.

Pro or college?

If pro: get used to taking the blame and being ignored by your players. There's nothing a pro coach can do to control a game or a season -- but that doesn't mean he won't get it in the shorts when that season goes south.

If college: don't watch the pros.
