The original Salems Lot from the seventies was a made for T.V movie that was pretty scary.
Would be rated PG-13 because It was released for T.V.
Yeah. The pirates of the Carribean movies are both quite scary and are clean cut as far as language and has no nudity.

Scary movies fall into two catagories, scary-scary and funny-scary. For PG-13 films I would suggest:
(Funny-scary movies)
Gremlins
Critters
Tremors
The Lost Boys (rated R)
Fright Night (rated R)
(Scary-Scary)
The Serpent And The Rainbow
Fear
The Others
Poltergiest
The Caller
The People Under The Stairs (rated R)
Christine (rated R, but made before PG-13 rating)
It (made for TV but scarier than most of this list)

The Ring. I checked, it is rated PG-13. The Ring II and III are also out, but not sure if they are also rated PG-13. Ring I starts off with a scary story that starts happening to people in the movie. It doesn't get really gory scary as far as horror films go. More like interesting scary, like how, well, I won't ruin the ending for you. You'll just have to see it. Also Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula is a classic, but not sure if its PG or R.

I still think The Birds is terrfying! Alfred Hitchcock was the best at scary. You might also try Psycho, the original. Yes, they're old, but they do hold up. Nice choices for a rookie. Avoid Saw, Hostel, Wolf Creek and the like.

Why don't you try "The Others" with Nicole Kidman. It's creepy, but not at all bloody. That might be a good starter for you. It's also just a really good movie overall.
