"Monster" just means it was a big hit, "Monster" hit, real popular. Rock is a type of music that has some ballads (like "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" by Poison), for example, but not all rock ballads are popular enough to be called a "Monster" ballad. Some are not popular at all, and will never make it to "Monster" proportions.

A Monster Ballad usually means a ballad done by a hard rock band or heavy metal (think Skid Row, Guns and Roses, any of those 80's hard rock/metal bands.)
