When I tread water, I must do it violently and feverishly just to keep my head above water. Is there a secret trick to it? How do people look so relaxed and don't need to fight to keep from sinking in seconds? I use the scissor kick which is the easiest for me. I run out of energy in seconds.

When you tread water, keep your abdominal muscles engaged the whole time. If you don't already have developed abs, it will be hard at first, but after a while, the muscles will build up and it will be a lot easier to keep them tight w/out really thinking about it. Next, if you can, move your legs either like you're riding a bicycle, or in opposing circles. If you have to use the scissor kick, don't pump your legs back and forth at lightning speed; move them at an even, medium pace. You want to keep your legs moving as SLOWLY as possible to conserve energy. Next, your arms should be moving in medium to wide, opposing circles. Your hands should start about a forearm's length away from your body, and they should move out from there. Also, they should come in almost to the point where they would meet in front of your chest, and then go out a few inches past your sides. Lastly, it helps if you lean forward, sort of rounding your back, rather than leaning backwards or trying to stay rigidly upright.I hope this helps, and good luck!!

Put your arms out in front of you with your palms facing in and down at a 45 degree angle. Now bending at the elbows bring your arms into your chest. Spin your wrists so that your palms are still facing down at a 45 angle and push away from your chest.

Relax relax relax. This is vital. Keep your shoulders and your ears apart. This will keep your head out and your body in.

Breath breath in breath out repeat calmly and smoothly. Air in your body helps to keep you afloat. Breathing too hard will exhaust you.

I find scissor kick is not the best for me and I prefer the frog kick

ok scissor kick is really only good to use if you really want a hard workout. personally i use a technique known as an "eggbeater". its kinda hard to explain but i'll try. ok so u look like ur sitting in a chair.. your right leg (the portion from your knee down) is going to make a circular motion in one direction (clockwise) while your left leg is making a circular motion in the opposite direction (counter clockwise)
its so hard to explain on paper anyways it should work a lot better than scissor kicking

Scissor kick up right while your hands paddle to the same length with your legs.

well thats the problem. instead of doing the scissor kick try kicking ur feet in little circles and moving ur hands gently in circles too. i think this will work much better in ur case.

when you move your arms, turn your hands kind of from side to side as you go back and forth. if you try to relax it will help to.
