Depends on the child, each one is different so there is not one exact, true, answer. I have had 6 children and have three grand babies and patted there backs to burp some of them right up to a year, for it is better to be sure your child has gotten all the air out of their tummy then to deal with a screaming child who has a belly ach, and for anyone who has had gas pains we know how bad it can hurt, so why take the chance on letting your little one get that pain when it takes something so simple to prevent it. If you pay close attention to your little one you will know when they don't need you to burp them anymore.

My baby started burping on her own at about three and a half months. I dont need to burp her..she just does it herself and doesnt get gas either.
