I'd follow John K's molding instructions using jidwg's tip of half the water- that would be your best bet for strength and longevity.
It might also help to use a quart or half gallon milk carton or a cardboard box lined with wax paper so you can just tear the mold away once the Jello has congealed; or if it's handy, a silicone pan will work well. It's gonna be difficult unmolding from glass or plastic.

My best guess:

1. Start with a container at least 2" deeper than the item is tall.
2. Pour in a base of 1" jello (double-strength would be a good idea).
3. Wait for it to set.
4. Place your item on the jello base
5. Pour a jello solution over the item until it reached the container top. Important! This time the solution must be cool enough that it won't melt the previously set jello.
6. Wait for it to set, then give the jello-encased item back.

Tip: Don't do this to anything he'd care about or that you're not willing to replace.

Bonus tip: Use many flavors of jello and add 1" at a time to return a "rainbow-jello-encased" item

Starting refrigerated, it'll probably take a couple hours, at least, before it starts to melt (place on a tray to keep the workspace clean). It'll take a lot longer to create your jello block in the first place.

Use Knox unflavored gelatin, mix using half the water called for. Put a small amount in a mold and put another bowl inside it to bring gelatin almost up to the top. Chill. Take the inner bowl out, you should have a clear bowl shape that when turned upside down would resemble a dome. Place the item you want encased upside down inside the bowl and finish filling with chilled Knox gelatin, again made with half the water called for, fill to level of other gelatin. When that sets, add a top (bottom) layer of a colored jello as the base. Will look awesome when turned upside down on a plate!

If you use half the amount of water as instructed on the Jello boxes, your Jello will be very, very firm ( like Jello Jigglers) and you won't have to worry about it melting for several hours after you remove it from the refrigerator.

Just get a big bowl and put it in it. It will probably last about 2 hours or so in room temp.
