To be fair the store didn't attempt to sell me anything. The guy did suggest that it was probable that I had a 2x card & suggested trying ebay or similar for a used card. So he wasn't on the "you'll need a new computer" routine. Trouble is I can't find the booklets for all the components to see what it's fitted with. The pc was built by a friend using components from Dabs so it could have anything in it! All I do know for sure is it's got a Pentium III 866Mhz processor.

look,my old PC was Pentium III 550MHz with 16MB graphics card and when i wanted to upgrade some persons said that if i get a higher one the PC will be slower as the processor is old and slow for it.so i didn't upgrade and after that i bought a new PC.
so u either get a new and much better PC or u get a used card because it is very hard to find a new one now.

i seem to get my hands on old towers all the time so I am faced with the same dilemma...
type in the numbers found on the cards or hardware and you will find all kinds of info on the Internet. from reviews to specs to downloadable manuals, etc.
as for a 2x card......i buy video cards that are compatible with 2x 4x and 8x so when i interchange them in different towers they will work.
