You have to have the catheter... Its not that bad. They wait until you are numb to put it in. Think about it... your legs are numb & aren't working so you can't get up to use the restroom. And when they take it out it only stings for like a second. I was a bit freaked about it too, but actually it was a relief to not have to keep getting up to go to the restroom... I labored 18 hrs then had a c-section. During the labor before my epidural I kept having to go pee...They would come & unhook all the machines walk me to the potty & by the time I got back to bed & re-hooked up to all the machines I had to go again.

They use the catheter for your convience as well as keeping the environment as sterile as possible during the C-section. Don't forget that a C-section is still surgery and the last thing a doctor needs to be worried about is you urinating during the procedure and/or having to change an incontinence pad while deliverying your baby. Also, the catheter cuts down on the movement you would otherwise have to do to get to the bathroom after the surgery is done, and thus you are less likely to open your surgical wound or rip stitches.

During the cesarean, catheters are used for the obvious reasons, no need to urinate and eliminates mess. After the surgery the catheter is left in so that you are able to rest easier and get a little healing time in before they take it out and you have to struggle to even sit up in the bed. Incontinence pads probably wouldn't do the trick, they would have to be changed fairly often and a catheter only has to be checked 3-4 times a day. I had one when I had my c-section, and I honestly didn't have any problem with it. I was already anesthetized when it was put in and it was the least of my problems when it was taken out. Don't stress, it really isn't as bad as it sounds.

I had a c-section 5 weeks ago and I also work in the medical field. My best guess to your question would be that they probably don't want urine to flow up into your vaginal canal since your cervix may not be fully closed at the time of surgery. I think thats a good question and maybe you should ask your doctor. I had the catheter and it was great since I had a spinal and couldn't move or feel anything from the waist down. It was only in for 3-4 hours anyway, and I never felt a thing. It was great :)

I was really scared to get a catheter when I had my first daughter, I had her naturally but I was scared it would hurt, after I had my epidural is when they did it and I did not feel a thing good luck and discuss it with your dr.

Trust me you wont' feel it .. if they do use one they don't put it in until your sleeping and half the time its removed before you wake up.
