How come Cape Verdean people have to identify as African American in this country. i know they are from a country that is off the coast of africa and is it included in the african country. But 71% of Cape Verdeans are Creole/mulatto (half white and half black). They are not allowed to identify as white or other. does anyone else think that is not right?

Why should anybody identify as anything other than a human being? Judge people on what they do, not how much melanin is in their skin.

Are you in the United States?

There is no form anywhere where you have to identify your race, or can be penalized for identifying incorrectly. THis is the law. A Cape Verdean person can identify on a form he's a Native American/Eskimo and it doesn't mean a thing.

The exception are scholarship forms. YOu can be penalized if you are white and identify as a minority because minorities recieve special scholarship an addmission benefits; so it's fraud.

Same thing with identifying as Native American on tax forms, because they don't pay federal tax.

Would being identified as 'White' make biracial Cape Verdeans feel superior, or would it make them better off in any way? What are the advantages, economic or social, of being identified as White instead of mixed-race or of African descent? In what way does being identified as black or African set someone back?

No one can force anyone to identify as anything, Perhaps there is emotional or societal pressure, because some may feel they're denying or ashamed of their African ancestry.

But when it's all said and done, who cares?

If they are biracial, then they are biracial. What country are you living in? In the US, a biracial person should list both races. If that option is not available, then they usually choose the one they most identify with, or that they most look like. (choosing the minority can help with scholarships and such, too)

They can call themselves whatever they want. Jsut look at the white people in this country insisting they are black so they try to act that way. It's their right to be whatever they want.

You can choose to not answer these questions, usually. Or say OTHER.
