If they are both close to same age, both single and seem to have an intellectual and conversational connection, how should one go about the situation with discretion? When and how should it be approached so that it doesn't jeopardize the student's standing in class? Any thoughts would be appreciated, especially from teachers or former teachers themselves.

While you're still in their class, strike up conversations with them after the lectures. Make sure that the conversation is related to the subject they're teaching. It's perfectly fine if the conversation wanders into unrelated areas (in fact, that's ideal). But whatever you do, don't ask them out for coffee or lunch or whatever until you have actually completed the course. You're conversations with your teacher after the lecture will start to ease your mind or let you know if you want to pursue a relationship later on. But remember, if the idea of asking them out feels uncomfortable to you, it's probably for a good reason. Obviously, asking anyone out feels a little odd, even scary, but if it feels inappropriate, then it probably is.

Really, there is nothing different about pursuing a relationship with your teacher except for one thing - don't actively pursue a relationship outside of the classroom until you are no longer their student. It could create a bad situation for both of you if you do. Keep it conversational until then - or to put it another way, keep it in the classroom. Also remember, that since you are the student, it will be up to you to make the first move - teachers don't usually want to be the one to initiate a relationship because they don't want to seem unprofessional if you say no.

Of course, my answer is assuming that you are both consenting adults - if not..... well, that's a whole other story! Lol

Wait until you are no longer a student in that class. Otherwise you could compromise the teachers professional standing among their peers.

Just ask, making a big deal about her a teacher and you a student just dramatizes the thing and keeps you from asking her out.

After student-teacher relationship ends...
Keep your feeling to yourself and wait until you are no longer a student..

Don't cross the line...or you may find a big bump...out..

I would wait until the class is near the end and ask her for lunch after finals.
