You probably have a twitchy controller. This has happened for a few of my consoles. For my playstation the square button would activate randomly, for my Gamecube, it's the Z button. You probably have a twitchy start button. You probably need to use a different controller, and if the problem persists, it's probably the system.

like pausing or freezing? if its freezing, your gonna wanna get it checked out. if its showing the ring of fire, you'r gonna have to fix it your self. i had that problem it took me and my cousins, an entire night to get it working again. but it is possible

Check and see if your start button is stuck.
