Why was New England interested in the Mexican War and its aftermath? What was in it for them?

It wasn't that they were interested or what was in it for them, it was that they were unhappy with the potential results. If the US won the war, they would conquer a large amount of territory, which because it was in the South, would likely be open to slavery, which meant another fight over slave states versus free states for control over the Senate. Also, a lot of New Englanders were unhappy with paying for and supporting a war that didn't benefit them in any way, and worse, seemed to be a war of choice, not of necessity.

They cared about preserving the balance of free and slave states in congress. The New England people wanted more free states so they could abolish slavery. They didn't want territories gained from the Mexican War to become slave states and make slavery legal in more places, making it harder to abolish.
