Probably it was legal. HR departments tend to thoroughly research these things before they pull the trigger. Consider all of the following:

1) First, regardless of whatever anger you may feel toward them , don't burn that bridge to your former employer. Call the HR Director and ask if they are willing to pay for an outplacement service for your benefit. These third-party companies can help position you for another opportunity.
2) Network, network, network! Get your resume in shape first and then everybody you know (and I mean everybody....even your kids friends) can be a resource to get you in touch with somebody who is hiring.
3) Brush up on your computer skills; take a class if necessary.
4) Don't automatically reject every job that pays less than what you were making before you were let go. Even if you are "underemployed" you can still look. And you will feel better about yourself if you are doing something, even if it is just delivering pizzas or working retail.
5) Consider a move to another part of the country. I live in Texas; its a lot warmer down here and we don't have state income taxes for individuals (but property taxes ARE high....sigh).
6) Keep your chin up!
7) Stay active. If you haven't been to church in years, GO! Those people can be a wonderful support network at a time when former (supposed) friends may shy away from you. Also, don't be afraid to talk to a pastor. God loves you!

Wellcome to america, I had 33 years of experience, but all the companys want today are button pushers no experience necessary, if you want to continue working as a real machinist you need to go to India, china or some repair shop like on Guam or the Philippines

Yes, they can. Suggest you apply for unemployment, and regroup. You will NEVER again make the type of salary you made with them, so you may need to reinvent yourself and take a lesser job. Sorry, but the fiftysomethings are now experiencing what today's twenty and thirtysomethings have yet to find out! Trust me, though, they will in due time. And skip the inane answers here that are usually by a bunch of know-nothing kids who haven't a clue as to what they are blathering on about. For instance, the one who told you to get a lawyer. Number one, that is INCREDIBLY expensive, and number two, the company will drag this out if you go to court, and you will be eligible for SS by the time you're finished. The company has the right to let you go and unless you can prove age discrimination (VERY DIFFICULT to do) you had better head to the unemployment office now!

corporations treat employees like slaves - and by the way.. you're over 40... you can go for age discrimination, especially if they hire someone younger than you to do the same exact job and gave you no valid excuse for firing you.

you're as good as the last job you do

it should be illegal, but these companies need to be hurt by lawsuits and actually want to be sued. they never learn.

I've very sorry to hear this. Try monster.com, careerbuilder.com, simplyhired.com and craigslist.com, plus your local classifieds (as I'm sure you know). Have you contacted the union or relevant association for your line of work? Who are the company's competitors? Go to them.
