This is a very good question, but it has a simple answer. The reason drive up ATM's have Braille dots is because people who use them are not necessarily driving the car. Just because you drive up to it does not mean you have to be in the driver's seat to use it. I have already used the ATM from the passenger's seat, and I know that my friend (who is blind) has used it when we were on a weekend shopping trip. However, I still had to help her with the instructions because the machine didn't have a voice output. Basically, I had to tell her what the directions were on the screen, (How much would you like to withdraw? Would you like a receipt? etc.) but she was able to punch in her pin number privately without me or anyone else knowing what it was. Even though it is not terribly helpful to her, she considers it a nice gesture made by the ATM company.

The true reason is...
Atm's use buttons right? After years they degrade and become broken and cracked. When they make the buttons they make them interchangeable meaning they could replace them on both walk up and drive up atms. They make all the buttons the same (with braille) to save money, rather than making two sets of buttons. And that is why they have braille.

another reason ATM machines manufacturers only make one type
of ATM
they have no way of knowing if the bank who buy the atm machines
where they are going to be placed..
plus its also requeried by the ADA as well

because of the fact the ATM producer would not be attentive to if the device is going to be put in as a walk up or a rigidity up device whilst that is bought. so as that they build them each and all of the akin to keep money.

They can drive, they just can't drive WELL. What I want to know is how do they know they got the amount of money they requested.

They can take a cab, or a friend takes them there....and they can still use the machine without 'having-to' trust someone else with their private info.
