They say that rape is not a question about sex. That, it is a question about violence. It might well be that. The motives and reasons might vary from domination or power, as in the cases of child rapists, sex abusers and the pedophiles.. Or it could be just a simple question of total control of the other person or the situation.
The rapist is a person with a poor self-image. The majority of rapists are men. He is dysfunctional and lacks the ability to develop a healthy interaction or relationship on a one-to-one basis. He is afraid of non-acceptance where he to act in his natural self.
Most rapists if not majority are men. A rapist resorts to violence to take something precious, forcibly and without consent. It's all a question of total lack of self control and a total disregard for the rights of others.
Growing up, my mother instilled in me so much fear about rape. That I dared not venture outside especially when it gets dark. These fears turned out to be unnecessary and unfounded. However, I'm glad she did.
To be leery and not have complete trust in others is good. It makes you less gullible and defenseless. Sometimes, it's a positive thing to keep your guard up. Other times, you have to have some shred of trust in mankind and find that goodness in your fellow men. .

Many answers indicate the control element in rape. Few answers look under the control to see what it is about the victim that the rapist wants. What does the victim have that the rapist wants to control?
It is so obvious to me that the rapist wants control because he is emotionally dependent on the victim for something.
Now you can't be logical about this.
You have to think in terms of associations of emotions, images, and symbols.
What image or symbol does the rapist associate with a victim and hunger for?
A mother image?
A source of security?
A source of pain?
A source of proving manhood?
A source of self worthiness?
I don't think you can profile a sex offender because the motives can differ just like the motives for murder can differ.

It's a tremendous need for control and they enjoy the force involved. That's why some rapist can walk past 10 easy women on barstools and follow the sweet little waitress outside to smoke a cig. He is evil and evil seeks to wipe out good. Whether it comes from nature or nurture, you asked why they do it. Mastery over the helpless and commanding fear. They love to hear you beg and whine. Sadists. Maybe if you learned some good self-defense tactics you might feel safer, especially where to kick a guy. A real rapist doesn't need to use his personals though, a broom or drill will do, but you need to learn how to render a man helpless. And stay out of dangerous places. Use common sense.

Power, it helps the feeling that they are in control of others and the feel that anyone else is less. Emotional problems are also in the mix, but that can be a power trip.

I think it has more to do with power than sex.
The perp has issues and wants to feel in control. I am sure this leads to his sexual gratifications, but the root cause is his need to feel control and power over someone.
