People gave a lot of criticism of what became known as the "Star Wars" defense system.
Here's an excerpt that may help explain.
"...President Ronald Reagan first announced his intentions to develop a new system to reduce the threat of nuclear attack and end the strategy of mutual deterrence.
The system he proposed became known as "Star Wars," after the popular movie, because it was meant to destroy missiles from space. The Soviets feared the system would increase the risk of the United States launching a first attack because U.S. officials would not fear retaliation".
Reagan scared the "honk" out the Russians with this.

the late great ronald reagan wasnt afraid to use his authority
to protect us and to use the military with all his power.
he gave us our back bone back, no one tested ronalds integrity,
to see if he would put up or shut up, what he said all knew to take
to the bank. col. kahdoffi, was made take notice of george w bush, the only other to do that was ronald reagan. may ronnie rest in peace.
ronald wasn't wishy washy or an *** kisser to other countries.
ronnie took care of iran and the hostages that carter played with.
trying to get them free. ronnie told iran keep the hostages, im in office jan 15th, then its my turn to deal with you.

Because of his approval and funding of the Stragic Defense Initiave (SDI) which ultimately broke and ended the Soviet Union, brought down the Berlin wall, and he did it by reducing taxes...

Those people hated Reagan because he stood up to the Soviet Union.
Like the Democrats of today, they didn't have the guts to stand up to anyone.

Because California is the state where the actual technologies used to force people into submission ( which everybody swears they know nothing about ) are most obviously applied. This because a sort of laissez faire commie/hood mentality prevails in California.
