My husband has phimosis and wants to get circumcised. We are ontario residents and believe it is covered under health insurance. Where is the best place to get a safe and professional adult circumcision?
urologist? doctor? plastic surgeon? jewish or related religious doctor? or doctor who recommends a surgeon?

Before you have this procedure done, you should know that there is a very real risk of loss of sensitivity as this study shows.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=16037710&query_hl=2&itool=pubmed_docsum

Masood S, Patel HR, Himpson RC, Palmer JH, Mufti GR, Sheriff MK.

Excerpts from the report:

OBJECTIVES: Currently no consensus exists about the role of the foreskin or the effect circumcision has on penile sensitivity and overall sexual satisfaction. Our study assesses the effect of circumcision on sexually active men and the relative impact this may have on informed consent prior to surgery.

Penile sensation improved after circumcision in 38% (p = 0.01) but got worse in 18%, with the remainder having no change. Overall satisfaction was 61%.

CONCLUSIONS: Penile sensitivity had variable outcomes after circumcision. The poor outcome of circumcision considered by overall satisfaction rates suggests that when we circumcise men, these outcome data should be discussed during the informed consent process. 2005 S. Karger AG, Basel

One out of five men circumcised suffers loss of sensitivity; one out of ten has painful erections or bleeding from sexual activity. All together, more than one out of three is not happy with the results; these are not very good odds. If your doctor can’t come up with any better solution, find another doctor.

That guy that is so happy he got circumcised as an adult should count himself one of the lucky ones that has suffered no ill effects (yet). One out of three men that wanted, or where convinced that they needed circumcision, are not happy with the results.

I would point out that while this study shows that adult men should be warned of the possibility of sensitivity loss before they can give "informed consent" to circumcision, there is no way that a newborn boy can give his informed consent to an elective procedure that has greater than 1 in 5 chance of leaving him with an impaired sex-life.

His body. His choice.

I suggest you seek a second opinion and consider the disadvantages.

Neither the BMA nor the equivalent American medical authority recommend circumcision as a routine procedure

The hygiene benefit is a myth and there is evidence on both sides of the STD debate, in any case the difference is minor.

The foreskin is not, as some people mistakenly assume, just extra skin, it is a functioning part of the organ and is involved with maintaining sufficient moistness of the Glans.

Sexual pleasure is greater for the man and many women report for them also.

Urologisy or your usual doctor.

Now some info on circumcision, keep reading...

CIRCUMCISION IS VERY BENEFICIAL, its cleaner, healthier and several prestigious research institutions have proved that circumcised men have less risk of contracting STD's such as AIDS-HIV, syphilis or herpes.

Uncircumcised penises are difficult to keep clean, and more prone to infections and penile cancer, studies have shown.
A circumcised penis is naturally clean and virtually free from urinary infections. You will not have to worry again with careful washing of your penis.

About STD's:

As I said, several studies carried out by prestigious research bodies have proved that uncircumcised penises are more prone to infections and contraction of STD's, including AIDS-HIV. It has been confirmed that circumcised men are up to 70% less likely to be infected than those who are uncircumcised. Have a look at this site: http://www.torontodailynews.com/index.php/HealthNews/2006121404Circumcision

As for women, studies also show that circumcision also protects female partners from AIDS-HIV and other STD's. Browse this article: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2006/02_08_06.html

About sensitivity of a circumcised penis:

NO medical or physiological study has ever shown that circumcision reduces sensitivity, opposed to common belief. It is completely FALSE that circumcision reduces penis sensitivity. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) confirms this on their web site; have a look at: http://www.aap.org/pubed/zzzjzmemh4c.htm

Circumcision is an easy and nowadays *painless* procedure, which has many benefits, and virtually no risks.
Circumcision is NOT an amputation. Circumcision is NOT comparable at all to female circumcision, which is something completely different.

Circumcision rates are INCREASING nowadays, both in the United States and overseas. Many African, Asian and Latin American countries with little circumcision tradition are starting to promote the procedure to help to reduce the AIDS-HIV infection rates.

Finally, this site has a lot of useful and *unbiased* information. Make sure you have a good look: http://www.circinfo.net

Your husband should go to your general practitioner and ask him to refer you to a urologist for circumcision. Circumcision is very beneficial and afterwards, your husband will be more hygienic, comfortable, his penis will look and function better and it will not smell, he will have more self-esteem and you both will enjoy FAR better sexual sensation during intercourse. There are no disadvantages. Do it!

Since you are talking adult male here, the urologist is the person you need to see. A urologist will do an evaluation and arrange the hospital for you, and his office can answer you about the insurance information.

Look coz I am Australian I don't know the answer to your question on where but I can tell you as someone who got Circumcized as an adult in Australia I do NOT regret it - I am posting this coz of the crap of the above answers saying there'll be less sensitivity etc.

If you want to GO FOT IT!!!!!

Well as someone who was circumcized at age 28 - the answer is if you want to be circumcized - tell your hubby to go for it man.

He will not lose any drive

Benefits are

No smegma {hot day I'd get a buildup of smegma}

No smell {I used to get smells only 1/2 an hour after washing underneath my foreskin}

Enjoy both handjobs & headjobs more as my penis head isn't moist from sensitivity.

My ex girlfriend thought I felt bigger we only reasoned this coz of the less skin

My ex & I had both been reluctant that I be circed coz all the males in both families had their foreskins

My ex AFTER I was circed definitely gave me oral a LOT more.

My EX said if she ever had sons they WOULD be circumcised.

I can now pee straight without the foreskin get in the way.

I now have NO pubes between the foreskin making me play with myself.

I have more intense orgasms much to MY surprise.

Oh yeah afterwards it didn't hurt THAT badly. I had sex approx 5 weeks later after the op.

My only regret was not getting it done tighter as there is a bit of loose skin on the side.

My only other regret is not getting it done earlier.

Look I didn't get my son circed coz 90% of Australian boys are not done nowdays but if I lived in Canada, the U.S, Middle East, Korea or Israel he certainly would've got done. I think the locker rom argument is an important one. I remembered I once got teased at primary school for NOT being circed as 90% WERE circumcised in the 60's & 70's.

If my son wants to get circed as he is older then I'll encourage him.

As I said earlier I only got circed reluctantly for medical reasons and if I had've read the anti -circ CRAP on the net there is no way I would've been done coz I wouldn't have known better.

I've written on this subject so many times coz I am totally against the scaremongering that goes on from the Anti -circ movement. It is rubbish. Male Circumcision is NOT mutilation unlike Female circumcision.

To all the males who've hung up's Re: mutilation - GET OVER IT being circed ain't THAT BAD in fact it has mostly benefits - enjoy your circumcized penis. our parents in making their decisions were only doing what they thought was best for you. So get over it & get a life.

To all the people who've got their foreskins if YOU WANT to be circumcised GO FOR IT - In my experience there has been NO downside. Hey I am NOT going to preach to you if you are happy with your foreskin - then certainly keep it. Why chop off something you are happy with????? Even I was pretty happy but due to an infection I HAD to be circed.

Now I've been circumcised for over ten years I personally think I prefer it being circed.

so that is my answer from someone who has experience of both ways

I'm in Ontario, too. I think the only choice you have is to see your family physician. He will refer to you to the appropriate specialist. I think you need the referral to get OHIP coverage (but I could be wrong).

Please get a second opinion. Circumcision is VERY seldom needed for phimosis. There are plenty of non-invasive ways of easing phimosis - ask his doctor.
