Any Chevy small block will go in with out complications since they are all basically the same block. Easiest to get your hands on and get parts for will be a 350. make sure you get a four bolt main. In case you do not know what that is pull the oil pan and look at the main caps holding the crank in place these should four bolts in stead of the weaker two bolt. A 383 is just a stroked out 350. A 327 is just a 350 with a shorter stroke. But any junk yard should have decent rebuildable 350 blocks. Or you could call Gm and get one of their crate motors which come ready to drop in from mild to wild

Should bolt right into any chevy truck up to 87. in 88 they changed the whole body. The engine will still fit, but I'm not sure if the mounts are different.

If you can spring for it go for the GM 383 truck engine. Consult the 2006 GM Performance Catalog. There are 6 different choices to pick from. Get this book for only $5.00 at any Chevrolet Dealer

Does it have to bolt up to the tranny, or are you replacing that as well. Even If you get a new motor(model wise) its fairly easy to move the motor mounts. If you are speaking of just fit space wise, Anyone of the crate motors, or pre-assembled motors will do. If I remember correctly the 76 has a huge hood area.

Just get a crate motor from GM or go to your local wrecking yard and get engine and tranny from a newer GM even consider a duramax diesel.

How about an LT 1? Or just a 350 small block. That's what I put in my old Jag and it works great.

You can put just about anything in there.I would find a nice fuel injected engine like an lt-1 engine that they put in firebirds and corvette.

if you want fuel injection you could go with a 90's year 350, plus its transmission. In my opinion if you completely rebuild yours it would be just as good as a newer engine. (that is if your not looking to go into fuel injec.)
