When should your daughter see a gynecologist?
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends teens visit a gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15 -- whether or not they are sexually active. If the young women is sexually active, the doctor may perform an internal exam to make certain everything is normal. A Pap test and breast exam may also be performed. If she is not sexually active, she may not require a full pelvic exam but this visit affords her the oppurtunity to ask questions and get answers on issues that may concern her. She will also be informed by the doctor as to what preventive measures she can take now in her young adult years to ensure good health for the future. In this way she can make responsible and informed decisions on matters that may impact her well being

I would think if she's a teen then now is the right time ... especially since they're talking about the vaccine for preventing cervical cancers that must be given prior to them becoming sexually active. It's best to start early and let her have some one to discuss issues she might have ... questions that every girl should have answered. And I am assuming you are talking an ob/gyn doctor ... and if she's shy then concern yourself with whether its a female doctor versus a male doctor.

I was told by a male doctor that my daughter required a pelvic exam at 12 and I flipped - especially that he continued to be so insistent on it, threatening that he could not do a consent for my daughter to participate in sports without it. (she was 12). I would never allow a male to do an exam on my teen for any reason, and she would be totally uncomfortable with it herself. My daughter was nearly traumatized to even her him saying what he needed to do. Funny thing, I agree with a sports exam to check out the condition of the heart, lungs, possible asthma, but for a doctor to do a pelvic exam, what the hell for? My parents would have never agreed to this with any of their teen girls. Not sexually active, what is the point? and male doctors don't need to exam teens. PASS!
