to prove they aren't illegal imigrants. The bosses want to see a passport or birth certificate and say a 2 part drivers licence is not acceptable. - Is this true? Sorry to ask more than one question.

Surely it is up to the bosses to find out - after all, they do have the employees national insurance number.

FluffyPin - the problem is 'privacy'. Why would anyone want to show their birth certificate to their bosses - it's a private and personal document

Also the person in question doesn't have a passport because they have no intention of ever leaving England

Is there nobody working in the employment law office here that can say why a 2 part licence (the new thing brought out), isn't sufficient enough to prove someone isn't an illegal immigrant?

Because the supermarket owners get fined a lot of money for employing illegal immigrants - it has been a big thing in the USA with Walmart.
An NI number is not proof of ID. Numbers can be bought or 'borrowed'.

Why should the company waste time and money when any one legally able to work would be able to provide this information easily.

I think all employers should start doing this. Why should legal citizens lose out on work?

I think it's a great idea - too many people illegally earning money and taking good jobs that our own nationals are entitled to!

i would ask for photo id and not a birth certificate, if you live here legally, whats the problem?
