example: If I say I don't like dark roast coffee and someone comes back with, 'oh, you probably mean you don't like burnt coffee' - when I totally know exactly what I mean! what is the word for what that person has done?
It drives me nuts not having a word to describe it, because people do it to me CONSTANTLY.

I don't know the "word" you're looking for, but just say, "no, you didn't hear me correctly. I said..."
