Eat them when they follow you. Cookies are tasty and make terrible spys. Dip those suckers in milk. They hate that.

Only way to definately prevent them would be to turn off cookies in your browser completely which isn't worth it.
If you use firefox you can add sites to the cookies exceptions in options > privacy. but for that you need to know where they come from. You could also take a look through http://addons.mozilla.org to see if there is an extension.
Tracking cookies probably aren't the worst of things though, mostly they are used to target ads on websites you visit.
In Spybot search and destroy enable advanced mode and select tools. There should be an option called opt out. this gives information on how to opt out of various things. You could try that but like it says just opt out of companies you get a lot from

Stop your worry!
Cookies are just small .txt (text) files that by themselves cannot hurt your computer. They are not a virus, but some people consider "tracking" cookies to be an invasion of privacy.
It all depends on one's level of paranoria.
Tracking cookies are mostly "3rd party cookies" from advertising servers. They can track your movements around the web in order to deliver to you customised, targeted advertising.
If you are using Internet Explorer for a browser, you can permanantly block all 3rd party cookies. Go to tools > internet options > privacy > advanced > checkmark "override automatic cookie handling" > third party cookies > tick "block" > ok > ok.

Use Spywareblaster, Winpatrol and Firefox and you'll never be bothered by tracking cookies again!
Also, remember to use the Immuniser in Spybot Search and Destroy, it blocks loads of stuff.

Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Try adding spyware blaster to your security programs.
Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Don't forget to use the Immunize feature of spybot.

Don't spend your whole life getting rid of tracking cookies. If you are wanting invisible web browsing take a look at the ip number blockers. If you want a site with no tracking cookies try mine you may like it - http://www.livestreamingwebcamandvirtualtour.eclipse.co.uk/

Reading the names of the cookies might shed some light on where they're coming from. But in general, they're not worth worrying about. Just keep on with the cleanups.

I have forgotten what a spam e-mail looks like and what is a cookie ? I don't understand why people can't subscribe to Yahoo e-mail plus, or the likes. For just £12 per year and you wouldn't have any hassle and scammers e-mails stealing your money.

If you are using:
Firefox
click tools>options
click privacy
under cookies change "Keep until:" to "I close Firefox"
IE7
well there isn't any real way to control cookies
click tools>Internet options
click privacy
move the "settings" slider to the option that most suits your needs

I do the same, I just run a quick scan every day and delete them. I don't think you can stop them, but someone else might know better so I'll be watching for other answers!
