I was in our new rented house on my own as the wife was picking up the kids at school. There was a knock on the door. I answered it and there was this man with a clip board. He asked me if I had gas or electric.
I didn't know! I told him to come back in ten minutes as my wife will know. He gave me a strange look then went on his way.
He came back in ten minutes but my wife was still not back. I decided to invite him in to find out himself. He went into the kitchen and told me I had electric. I thanked him and he left.
Am I thick? Or am I a typical man?

Listen Crooky! When you write, try and not get confused with 'Where' and 'Were'. You sound thicker!

Not everyone can have knowledge in everything. I'm pretty good at home repair but I couldn't tell you the name of any NFL Quarterback or who was even in the SuperBowl or World Series.
As a bit of good advice learn where the gas and water cut off's are in your house (or outside). It could save your kids and or stuff. Ask the landlord.
You're not stupid and your text was the only one I've seen with the grammar and spelling correct.

We all pay attention to those things that are important to us, and often don't have a clue about those that aren't.
Over time, I've learned that gas is much, much better for cooking, usually better (and cheaper) than oil or electricity for heat, and generally more efficient for heating hot water.
But when I was in my first house or first apartment - and hadn't become serious about cooking and hadn't paid utility bills - I probably wouldn't have known the difference or cared much one way or the other.
So not thick; maybe just young and inexperienced.

Gas or electric what?
It sounds to me like HE was an idiot if he asked the question as you have phrased it.
If you didn't know whether you have a gas or electric STOVE then your wife is a saint for staying with you.
Learn to cook and do a little of the housework. (unless you are the bread winner and your wife does not do paid employment, only the housework.)
If you're a typical man then women are right for complaining.

thick...sorry most men know the differences between gas & electric. Maybe stop depending on the wife so much. And try learning a few things around the house. It would be good for you, and maybe a good hobby. And it would impress your wife!
Good luck

You're thick. A typical male would have had half a dozen arguments with his wife about how gas is better than electric because it's cheaper. :)

Since it was a new rented house, you may not have realized that your stove has coils that heat up (electric) or a gas flame. Your heater could be gas and your stove could be electric, so unless you checked each appliance, there's no way you could know.

Gas or electric stove? The gas stoves had burners and steel supports that hold the pots and pans off of the flame, Electric have burners that you set the pans on.

I don't have the answer your looking for, but I don't think it was wise to just invite him in...no telling what he may have really wanted or what he was looking for. What if it was your wife that let a stranger in the house? Could be scary...
