There were women who disguised themselves as males in order to fight on the front lines, there were women who were spies. There were women who helped in the hospitals or raised money for the cause. Women held down the homefront while their men were at war. They took up jobs and many had start doing the work of the slaves who were no longer there to help.

During the Civil War women had to take up the slack left by men going off to war. This is much the same as the two world wars. There was such a huge loss of lives that many women took up running family farms and finding menial jobs in order to support families.

Well I wasn't around then so strictly speaking I dont know. But one would assume, since women weren't actually enlisted in the army in those days, that their main job would be to stay at home and mind the children and keep the household together as best possible including any land they might be farming etc. And wait for the news from the front good or bad.
I am sure if you are really interested in this subject that there are many good books in the library about this time although I know that the female contribution is often overlooked and under reported... but believe me some woman's libber would have written about this subject somewhere... just keep digging.
Got it!

Many women actually traveled with the regiments up to a very close point of any battlefield. We just don't read about the women who died in service to their cause, but there were quite a few. They staffed the field hospitals and helped maintain conditions in the camps.
Others stayed in their home area, tending to the chores and responsibilities left behind when their male family members went off to serve.
A lot of large businesses in the north would have crumbled it it hadn't been for the brilliant execution of business plans implemented by women who had never had a say openly in their lives up to that point. Some of those businesses turned into huge corporations that are still around to this day.
Women in the south also kept control of businesses but with the crumbling financial stability of the region, very few remnants remain of entire families much less businesses...
There's much interesting documentation about women's roles in unusual occupations during the war like being caught for spying (most of them actually WERE) and the ones that twisted the gears for many a brilliant and ingenious things that changed history. Seems when all the men were away, women changed a lot of things...but unfortunately history books that tell the stories of them are rare.
Women carried the strength in both sides because just like many times before and after, wars take away men. Period. They fed the families, made uniforms, prayed, helped neighbors, stole from kinfolk, gave birth after not eating for a week, buried their brothers, waited at the train station to hear that one name....and often times heard it.
Although there were strong and motivated women who felt cozy with ambition, I'm sure there were at least a few that broke down completely shattered because someone they loved dearly was probably not going to come home.
More people need to realize that you don't have to go directly into war to be in the middle of it so to say...and you don't have to be a soldier to be a hero.

like any other wars, women took the man's place, they looked after the family and the community...in these times that's when most women empowered themselves, through being independent, some became nurses on the battle field and some became leaders in the community.
