someone in my family is selling their 1999 mitsubishi eclipse and they found out that the engine with 68000 miles has 50% engine compression and is basically from 4 cylinders to 3.25?? what does that mean and is it easy to fix?

It means the engine is toasted. Very common with the cars. Unless it's cheap don't do it.

Usually compression is not measured in percent. It is measured in PSI. Post this question again with the PSI for each cylinder.

Remember that the throttle is supposed to be wide open and all spark plugs out when they check or you will get weird results sometimes.

I seriously doubt 50%. The car probably wouldn't even run with that. I doubt the problem is that bad if there even is a problem. 68,000 is not that many miles.

It means they need to pay you $3000 to take the car off their hands. My best advice is to run away from this car as fast as you can. These engines are know for having cracked heads $$$$. Go buy a 99 Honda Accord 4 cyl instead. You'll be glad you did.

It would take more to replace that engine than the car is worth. If the engine is worn that badly after 68,000 miles, somebody must not have taken care of it. You could expect more problems to show up.
