check your home owner / renter insurance policy it might cover theft of such items outside the home. but if you claim don't mention you lost from inside a vehicle or else it's on the auto insurance company.
If you have comprehensive on the car then that covers theft but only above whatever your premium is (probably more than an new video ipod).
Other option is a lawsuit against the towing company but it's a "your word against his" situation. In any case the legal fees involved will probably again exceed the cost of a new ipod. I guess it depends on the state, if you win in small claims court I think you can roll up legal fees into the settlement, no?

On this, if you don't get it back you will most definitely have to take them to small claims court for that, make sure you take a photo of where you left it and bring the invoice showing the purchase price, the crooks that tow cars do this all the time that's their "profession" they are real thieves. I've gone through stuff like that, once they towed my white BMW and took out the gate remote another time I had a newer one, (car) and got towed, they scratched it and didn't put it on a flat bed and it goes on and on, they are the worst nightmare, don't let them get away with it, if you don't get in by talking to the owner, let them know you'll see them in court, see if that will make them give it up. Try to record the conversation if you have a mic. recorder.
Best wishes!

I hope you have insurance if you stuff gets stolen. If you live in an apartment though and have renters insurance, they will cover anything stolen in your car as well.

go to wherever the car was taken in person and ask for it. if they don't have it and have no idea where it is file a report against them, but only if you really suspect that they took it.
