The four seasons of three months' duration each is human artefact created in northern Europe based on the behaviour of animals, birds and plants and the changes in the weather. Many places in the world do not have four seasons.

In Australia, the Arrernte people of Central Australia have two seasons while the people of the Kimberley in the northwest have five. The Bundjalung people from my area of northern NSW and the Gagadju people of Arnhem Land have six seasons while the Wik people of Cape York Peninsula have eight. This is just a small sample. These are named seasons identified in exactly the same way as the northern European four.

That being said, when people talk of four seasons some countries start them on the equinoces and solstices while others start them on the first of the month. It makes no difference as it is all human artefact. In Australia, Spring starts on September 1.
