As the Harry Potter books get longer, the movies are forced to leave out entire storylines, but the numerous directors have done pretty well so far.
Unless the book is less than 150 pages, it is inevitable that parts are left out. 95% of the time, the book is more entertaining because imagination is better than what one person's vision on the screen shows you.

The Last of the Mohicans. Much of the character development was left out because it would have made the movie too long.

I've read the novel by James Fenimore Cooper and saw the 1992 movie with Daniel Day Lewis.
