My Mother passed away several years ago. I had one sister who passed away a few years ago. My Mom had always promised my sister the engagement ring she wore because my only sister's birth month was April (diamond). I had no problem with this. Then after my sister passed on, a sister in law (who is divorcecd from my brother now) confiscated the ring and won't give it up. I have asked my Brother to intervene but they don't have a good relationship and he doesn't want to make waves. I have asked her by mail and got no response. What would you do? What is proper etiquette? The ring is of little value but means a lot to me because I have nothing that belonged to my Mom.

Take your sister in law to court. She should know better. She's no longer in the family. I'll bet she would not want you to do this to her.

We had a similar situation in our family, where an ex wife took an antique mantel clock that was promised to my husband by his grandfather. Anyone who would do this is heartless. The rules of etiquette are lost on these people. Does your brother have children by this thief of a woman? If there is a daughter, and she was close to your mother/her grandmother, ok. If not, and you want your mother's ring, then go get it. She may have already pawned, lost, or given it away- but find out and offer to buy it or take her to court. Good luck. I hope you get the ring that is rightfully yours. If not, it is just a possession. More important are the memories of those you loved. No thief can rob you of those.

this is heartbreaking, and ur sister-in -law is heartless.to lose both ur mother and sister is terrible. the only thing u can do now,is offer to buy back the ring, she's already shown that she's mercenary,by appropriating the ring to begin with-wave some cash in her face and she'll give it back to u-for a price.but its worth paying to get it back.maybe someday you will have a daughter to give it to.good luck.dont worry about etiquette,go to her house prepared to pay,and bribe her.money is what motivates her.do it b4 she pawns the ring and its lost to u for good !!!!!
