When your head gasket goes, you will not be able to drive. Question is, how did they determine that your head gasket would need to be replaced? Did they remove your heads?(Doubtful) Did they notice the gasket beginning to protrude from around the head? Once the head gasket does go, your vehicle will being leaking coolant into the cylinders and your car will overheat severly(thus becoming undrivable). It's also a very expensive repair.

A blown up head Gasket will: 1. Overheating in very little time 2. Modern car won't start 3. Oil into spark plugs 4. Severe damage to the cylinder. we have to know what car, model, cylinder, engine type and size. All those counts to the diagnosis. From what you say, you may have a used 2002 model car and since you said that car is running fine, I guess there's nothing serious with it. There's one test -it seems funny though- check your radiator cap. The rubber in the cap may be worn and the cap needs to be changed. This will cut the repair price by 1/100. If the radiator cap is good then, check your radiator leaks. It sometimes gets very nasty and un noticeable. Go visit a mechanic and ask him to run pressure test to see if there's any leaks in the radiator and with a small weld, you don't have a problem

Blown head gasket will let oil and anti-freeze mix. The mixture will get into the cylinder heads, damaging the motor. Oil in the water jacket will not allow the engine to cool properly, and you'll ever heat or worse. You'll also get a bunch of smoke out of the tailpipe. In any event, it's not good. But take it for a second opinion as many mechanics like to replace head gaskets for the simple fact that it is an expensive repair.

I would have a hard time believing that you needed a head gasket and didn't notice - and it took a mechanic to find it while fixing a gas leak.
Definately get a second opinion. This does not sound right at all. I agree with the other guy that said this.

If you don't replace it and it goes, your car will no-go and a bunch of smoke will come out from under the hood.
This happened to me on a 4-lane busy highway (2 direction), and I was in the left lane, stuck there. Had to get towed.
Then paid $1,600 to get the head gasket replaced, amongst other things because when it blew it spewed fluids all over the other engine parts too, and it damaged them also.

i had a car that that happened to, the head gasket went out and we couldnt drive it. My man and his friend got a new gasket and a repair manual from the store and had it fixed in a day. He had no mechanic experience other than changing oil and did fine..

Did you find out from the mechanics where the gas leak come from? Unlikely they can telll you need a head gasket though just from fixing a petrol leak. I'd say take it for a second oppinion if you are not sure. but watch out for those sharks they'll help burn a hole in your pocket.hehe. if your oil looks fine and it doesn't use water i'd say its fine.

Your head gasket seals the combustion chamber, the coolant passages and the oil passages. a break usually occurs from the combustion chamber to the coolant passage. On the combustion stroke, gases will leak into the coolant, ruining its cooling and lubricating properties, then on the intake stroke, the coolant will be sucked into the combustion chamber to eventually corrode the chamber walls and ruin the whole engine. If your oil cap has a residue resembling peanut butter under it or your coolant has a multi colored layer on top of it, be prepared to spend a couple pay checks!

If your head gasket goes, it could cause major engine damage. Antifreeze could mix with your oil and cause an overheat, internal damage, warped heads, etc etc...
Monitor your antifreeze level. If you notice it is getting low, it's either mixing in with your oil, or blowing out your tailpipe. Either way, it's not good.
I'm going to guess you have a 3.1 Liter engine.

A bad head gasket is dangerous... and expensive. You're going to have to take care of it though. Bummer. Same thing happened with my old Cavalier.
