An altitude is a segment perpendicular to the line containing one side of a polygon, or to the base of a polyhedron, that intersects a vertex not contained on that side/face, in the case of a triangle or pyramid, or the opposite side/face, in the case of a quadrilateral or prism.

Also known as height.

Altitudes are the perpdendicular measures from a base of a plane figure to the vertex of the angle opposite it. A triangle has three of them. They frequently are used to help find the area of the figure. In a triangle, the altitudes come together, usually inside the triangle, though not always, at a point called the orthocenter.
