After making the fire, just click on one of the shrimp (or other fish/meat) & click on the fire to pull up the quantity (if there's more than one).
Usually the higher the level of the item you're trying to cook, the more likely you'll burn it at your current cooking level.
If you try cooking Shrimp (Lv 1) at Lv 1 Cooking, you're going to burn a lot in the process. When you get to Lv 10, your burning rate drops to about 25%. When you get to Lv 20 & higher, you'll rarely burn them.
The same goes for Lobsters (Lv 40). At Lv 40, you'll burn a lot of them. When you get to Lv 50, you're burning about 25%. At Lv 60, you're down to about 10% or less.
Stoves (or "Cooking Ranges") can decrease the amount you burn, but they're in limited areas & can be a hassle to find if you're not near a town.

Hehe. What's your cooking level? Often times, you will burn many many shrimp before you cook a good batch. Don't worry though, at a low cooking level, you will go up quickly :) Good luck! Try buying a chef hat or apron too, they help you burn less. You can also look into doing quests, such as Cook's Assistant, that give you cooking experience. (Start this quest by talking to the lumbridge castle chef)

You're doing everything right, I played that game for about a couple months, took me forever to get 63 cooking. Time, the key to all your questions. Best of luck. :D

This depends on your cooking level. It shouldn't always say "burnt". Nothing is wrong what you are doing. It's just when you are at a low level you burn food easily.
