Most outstanding!!!!!!
Actually I always recommend planting grass from seed and never from sod. For one, its cheaper, and the grass becomes more tolerant and healthier.
Ok, so where is what you wanna do. You're goanna need the following. Grass seed, which duh, you already have, a rake (not a flimsy one, but get a heavy duty one) and some top soil or steer manure, usually sold by the 1cu ft bag at any Lowes ir Home Depot. Ok, so first prep your area by raking it, breaking up the dirt, and getting rid of as many rocks and dirt clods bigger than an inch. Next use one bag of top soil or steer manure for roughly every 10 to 15 sq ft. You'll wanna spread it out using the back (flat side) of the rake to where its about 1" to 2" thick. Once thats done, and this is just my own personal preference, spread it out by hand. I do it this way so I have more control of where it goes. Also be very liberal with how much you use. I tend to use about 1 handful of seed for about every 3 or 4 sq ft. Just make sure its evenly distributed as best you can. Next, spread out a thin layer of topsoil over the seed, it should be just barely enough to cover the seed. This helps the seed to germinate. Just be sure its not too thick as it can damage the grass when it begins to emerge. Then all you gotta do is water it at least once or twice a day for about 5 to 10 minutes, for the first two or three weeks, then every other day, so long as the soil is moist. Dont let it dry out. After the grass starts to sprout, look for any bare spots, and re-seed those areas, then another light layer of soil just like before. Finally, after about 3 to 4 weeks after it has all filled in, give it a trim. But dont go too far down. A rule of thumb is to leave it sorta long, and gradually trim it to your desired length, but a healthy lawn should be about 2" to 3" long, and you should never trim off more than 30% of its length at any time. Oh one other thing too, if you really hate weeding, and can spend a little extra dough, get a roll of weed screen. Its a cloth like barrier to help keep weeds out. I had to use it once before and MAN oh MAN did it help out.
Here is what you would need to do in that case: get the cloth and a box of nails, like the kinds that are like 3" long with a flat head on them.
Lay out the cloth, staking it town with nails along the upper most part, assuming you have any slope. Over lay each section by about 3 to 4 inches. Just make sure you get it staked in well. Next, using your rake, or better yet a pitchfork, poke holes in the cloth every foot or so. This will help the grass to root in the soil beneath. Then pour on the top soil in the bags as stated before, but lay it on about 2" to 3" thick. Then seed and water as stated above. And believe me when I say that your grass will be all the better, and very thick...

Kill weeds. It's not that easy either. You might have to spray more than once. If it is growing season where you live... first use a broad spectrum weed killer like roundup. Wait a week.... everything should be dead.... but some seeds may have sprouted. If that is the case... spray again. Then you wait another week (for the roundup to breakdown).... spread grass seed with a seeder so it is uniform.... and then either rake it lightly and spread a "starter fertilizer" or else cover it with a thin layer of seeding soil. Some people cover it with straw to keep it from drying (I find this plants more weeds). You MUST then keep the seed from drying out. If it dries after it sprouts it is dead.... so water frequently (and the seeding soil can help keep it moist). If all goes well you will have a thick lawn in no time. Be sure to buy grass seed at a local greenhouse..... they will have seed blends suitable for your area... as opposed to simple blue grass blends that you find at Home Depot. This will allow you to spend less on water.

what kind of grass? usually you can just sprinkle the seeds with your hands and kind of lightly dust the ground with them. then cover it all up with some hay. the hay keeps the seeds from blowing away and helps keep birds from eating them. the grass will grow right thru it. once all this is done give it some h2o. fescue is a good grass for this time of year, i think - assuming you live in the northern hemisphere.

This is what I did and it gave me pretty good results. I had bought half of a pick up truck load of soil from a nursery which had a little fertizer in it. I laid it out, put some seed on top, and kept watering it almost every day for two weeks.

you simply put the seed down evenly and then water it. depending on the grass...keep off of it until it comes up....some it actually helps if you walk on it....if it is in the shade...then you need to have a specific shade grass mix. read the directions on the bag of seed.

Rip out whatever is there until you have bare earth. For best results, lay down fertilizer and mulch. Then, just spread the seed by hand over the fertilizer/mulch. You don't need to "Plant" it, just sprinkle it over the earth and it will grow.
