He's usually around people most of the time and when he's alone I have no clue what to say and I get nervous

Figure out a way to get them alone, and talk just like you are talking to one of your friends. No pressure, just friendly conversation.

just start w/ light casual conversation!! Like how r u today? Or I dont know that I know u but I would like to get to know U! Something simple like that and dont be nervous about it just breathe!!!!

My trick is to find out what he likes and ask him a question about it. This gets 'em talking.

Just whip it out and say" Meet Sally, shes kinda shy."

Just say, "How's it going?" if he's not doing anything. If he's reading say, "Anything interesting happening in what you're reading?", and if he's drinking coffee say, "Kinda chilly today isn't it?"
